How to Calculate How Much Roofing Material You Need

1

Measure your roof area

Multiply length × width for each section. A simple gable roof has two sections.

2

Adjust for pitch

Steep roofs require more material. Use a pitch multiplier: 4/12 pitch = ×1.054, 6/12 = ×1.118, 8/12 = ×1.202, 12/12 = ×1.414.

3

Add waste factor

Add 10–15% for cuts, waste, and overlaps. Add 20% for complex roofs with many valleys.

4

Convert to squares

Divide total adjusted sq ft by 100 to get squares.

5

Calculate bundles

Multiply squares × 3 (standard; each bundle covers ~33 sq ft).

Rise = 6Run = 126/12 pitch× 1.118 multiplier

Roof pitch cross-section — rise over run

Worked Example

30 × 40 ft roof (both sides) = 2,400 sq ft. With 6/12 pitch multiplier (×1.118) = 2,683 sq ft. Plus 15% waste = 3,086 sq ft = 31 squares = 93 bundles of shingles.

Roofing Labor Costs by Region (2026)

Labor is typically 40–60% of a roofing job. Rates vary significantly by state.

Mid-Atlantic (PA, MD, VA)$60–$100Moderate rates
Southeast (FL, GA, SC, NC)$45–$75Competitive market
Midwest (OH, IN, IL, MI)$50–$80Mid-range
South Central (TX, OK, AR)$45–$70Lower labor costs
Mountain (CO, UT, AZ, NM)$55–$90Growing demand
Pacific Northwest (WA, OR)$70–$120High cost of living

Roofing Calculator FAQ

How many shingles do I need for a 1,500 sq ft roof?

For a 1,500 sq ft roof with a moderate 6/12 pitch, apply a pitch multiplier of 1.118, bringing the adjusted area to about 1,677 sq ft. Add 15% waste (typical for a standard gable roof) to get roughly 1,929 sq ft — or about 20 roofing squares. At 3 bundles per square, that is 60 bundles of shingles. Always round up to the nearest bundle.

What is a "roofing square"?

A roofing square is a unit of measurement equal to 100 square feet of roof area. Contractors and material suppliers use squares because it simplifies ordering. Most shingle manufacturers package shingles in bundles of approximately 33 sq ft, so it takes 3 bundles to cover one square.

How long does it take to reroof a house?

A typical single-family home reroof takes 1–3 days for a crew of 3–5 workers. A small 1,200 sq ft roof may be done in a single day; a complex 3,000+ sq ft roof with multiple valleys, dormers, or a steep pitch can take 3–5 days. Weather, material delivery, and deck repairs can add time. Always build a buffer day into your project schedule.

Should I repair or replace my roof?

The general rule: if more than 25–30% of shingles are damaged, cracked, or missing — or if the roof is within 5 years of its expected lifespan — a full replacement is usually more cost-effective than repeated repairs. Signs that lean toward replacement: granule loss in gutters, widespread curling shingles, daylight visible through the attic, or multiple areas of active leaking. An inspection by a licensed roofer is the most reliable way to make this call.
